Silicone Render vs Monocouche: Which Is Right for Your House?
Last updated:
This comes up on nearly every quote we do for a new build or a renovation. Both are good systems — the right one for you comes down to your property, where it sits, and what you want from it down the line.

What is monocouche?
Monocouche (French for “one coat”) is a cement-based render that goes on in a single pass. The big draw is that it's through-coloured — the colour runs all the way through the material, so if the surface gets scratched or chipped you see the same colour underneath, not grey cement. That means no repainting, ever.
It's a solid, fairly rigid system. It works very well on stable backgrounds — new blockwork, concrete, pre-cast panels. It breathes well too, so it lets some moisture vapour out rather than trapping it in the wall.
Because it's cement-based, it's harder and less flexible than silicone. On a house with good solid masonry and no real movement, that's not a problem. On older buildings or timber frames that expand and contract with the seasons, we've seen it pick up hairline cracks over time.
What is silicone render?
Silicone renderis a polymer-modified system — it's got silicone in it that makes it really water-repellent. Water beads off the surface instead of soaking in. It's flexible too, so it can take a bit of movement in the wall without cracking.
The self-cleaning side is worth a mention. Because water won't soak in, algae, moss and dirt struggle to get a foothold. On a house near the sea that gets hammered by rain most of the year, that's a real plus — the rain washes the surface down rather than soaking into it.
Like monocouche, the good silicone renders are through-coloured and breathable. They cost a bit more, but on the right house the extra is money well spent.
At a glance — side by side
Monocouche
- One-coat application
- Through-coloured — no repainting
- Solid, durable finish
- Best on stable, new substrates
- Slightly lower cost
- Less flexible (more rigid)
Silicone Render
- Hydrophobic — water beads off
- Self-cleaning in rain
- Flexible — handles movement
- Highly breathable
- Best for coastal exposure
- Slightly higher cost
Choose monocouche if...
- →It's a new-build extension on modern blockwork — a stable substrate that won't move
- →The property is in a sheltered location away from the coast
- →You want a slightly textured, scraped finish
- →Budget is tighter and the property doesn't face extreme exposure
- →The build schedule needs a faster one-coat solution
Choose silicone render if...
- →The property is on or near the coast — anywhere from Bude to Widemouth Bay to Barnstaple
- →It's an older property with some structural movement
- →It's a timber frame build
- →You want maximum longevity with minimum maintenance
- →Low algae growth is important (holiday lets, rental properties)
- →You're rendering over an existing substrate that needs flexibility
What products do we use?
We use premium low-carbon render systems from trusted British manufacturers. For silicone render their topcoats are spot on — through-coloured, flexible, and in a good range of colours. For monocouche we use equally reliable professional-grade products.
These are made in Britain, using lower-carbon materials than the old renders, which matters to some of our customers — and it's something we reckon matters either way.
The same question comes up on every quote: what colour. Our main suppliers offer around 200 standard colours plus colour-matching if you want something specific. The classic Cornish off-whites and warm creams sit best on old cottages; the sharper greys and charcoals look good on modern builds. If the colour's borderline we always order a sample pot first.
Our honest verdict
For most jobs in Cornwall — especially anything within a few miles of the sea — silicone render is usually the right answer. The price difference is modest. The performance difference, over a 20-year horizon, is significant.
Monocouche still has its place, particularly on inland new-build extensions where the substrate is rock-solid blockwork and the exposure is mild. We won't talk anyone into silicone they don't need.
