Bideford is a North Devon town on the River Torridge with a proper mix of architectural periods — Georgian and Victorian buildings along the quay, the kind of post-war semis and bungalows you see right across the South West, and newer development on the outskirts. The post-war housing stock in Bideford — the semis and bungalows built in the 1950s through 1980s — often has original pebbledash or sand and cement render that's reaching the end of its life. Sixty years of North Devon weather takes its toll. Where the existing render is sound we can often work over it with a modern system and mesh. Where it's blown or failing, it needs to come off and be done properly.

For the older Victorian and Georgian properties near the quay and town centre, the approach is more carefully tailored to the building. A number of these are listed or in conservation areas, which means checking with Torridge District Council before starting any external rendering work. Where a breathable render is appropriate — for older solid stone or brick construction — that's what we'd recommend.

Bideford is growing and there's a reasonable amount of new development work — extensions and new builds where we apply monocouche or silicone render to modern blockwork.
